🌊 Ocean Safety Tips for New Surfers and Families

Stay Safe, Have Fun – Ohana Style
At Ohana Surf Shop, we’re all about helping new surfers and families feel confident in the water. But first—safety comes before stoke. Whether you’re learning to surf, splashing with your kids, or just hanging by the shore, these tips will keep everyone safe and smiling on the Treasure Coast.
🌀 1. Understand Rip Currents
Rip currents are fast-moving channels of water that flow away from the beach. They’re one of the most common hazards for swimmers and surfers—and they can appear even on sunny days.
🔎 What to Look For:
Water that looks darker or calmer between breaking waves
Foam, seaweed, or sand being pulled seaward
A visible gap in the wave pattern
Caught in one?
👉 Stay calm. Don’t fight it.
Swim parallel to shore to escape the current. Once free, swim back in at an angle.
🚩 Always check the beach flags before entering the water:
Green: Safe conditions
Yellow: Use caution
Red: Strong hazards present
Double Red: Water closed—stay out
When in doubt, ask a lifeguard. They’re there to help and happy to answer questions.
🐙 2. Be Jellyfish Aware
Warmer months = more marine life near shore.
Yes, that includes jellyfish.
If stung:
Rinse the area with vinegar (not fresh water)
Don’t rub it—this spreads the sting
Seek help if the reaction is serious
🧴 We stock natural sting soothers at Ohana—great to have on hand for the whole family.
🌞 3. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Florida sunshine is no joke—especially after hours in the surf.
Best Protection:
UPF-rated rash guards (skip the sunscreen and stay cool)
Sun hats or surf caps for face protection
Reef-safe sunscreen with SPF 30+
💡 Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes—especially after swimming or sweating.
🌱 At Ohana, we carry non-toxic sunscreens safe for both your skin and the reef, plus soothing after-sun care for beach days that last a little too long.
✅ Don’t forget the often-missed spots:
Ears
Neck
Tops of feet
