🏄‍♂️ How to Choose the Right Surfboard

Local Tips from the Crew at Ohana Surf Shop – Stuart, FL

Choosing your first (or next) surfboard isn’t just about picking a size—it’s about choosing something that fits your skill, your body, and Florida’s unique waves.

At Ohana Surf Shop, we’ve helped thousands of surfers—from first-timers to locals dialing in their custom boards—find their perfect match. Here's what you should know:

📏 1. Start with Your Skill Level

Beginner:
Choose a board that’s long, wide, and stable—typically a foamie or funboard between 7'6" and 9'0". These boards make it easier to paddle, catch waves, and stay balanced.

Intermediate:
If you're starting to make turns and trim along the face, it’s time to explore mid-lengths or hybrids with more maneuverability but enough volume to stay forgiving.

Advanced:
You already know what you like. We stock high-performance shortboards and custom shapes that suit Florida’s unique wave conditions.

🌊 2. Match the Board to Local Waves

On the Treasure Coast, waves are:

  • Small and soft in summer

  • Choppy or powerful during hurricane season

  • Clean and fun on rare offshore winter mornings

This means boards with more volume and rounded noses generally perform better throughout the year.

🪵 3. Understand Board Types

  • Soft Top (Foamie): Great for beginners. Safe, durable, and super floaty.

  • Longboard (9'+): Smooth rides and easy paddling. Perfect for small days and classic surf style.

  • Mid-Length (7’–8’): A great middle ground—easy to paddle, easier to turn.

  • Fish: Short, wide, and fast. Ideal for Florida’s mushy waves.

  • Shortboard (5’6”–6’4”): Best for advanced surfers chasing steep drops and performance.

🎯 4. Fit the Board to Your Size

A general rule: The bigger you are, the more volume you need.
Your height, weight, and fitness level all matter when choosing the right board.
